A QR Code's type is defined by two independent decisions: the structural format that holds the data, and the destination content that opens when someone scans it.
What determines a QR Code’s type?
A QR Code's type depends on two independent variables: structural format which is the pattern and version, such as Model 2 or Micro QR Code, and destination content, the action triggered when scanned, such as joining a WiFi network or opening a webpage. Most QR Code type lists conflate these two variables, which is why unrelated categories like "Facebook QR Code" and "Micro QR Code" end up grouped together. What are the different types of QR Codes?
QR Codes support more than 20 content types, each defined by what happens the moment someone scans. Start by choosing the destination you need as the structural format underneath rarely changes what you actually have to build.
Website QR Code: Opens any URL when scanned, from a homepage to a single landing page. Marketers use it most often because it fits nearly any campaign, from print ads to product packaging.
PDF QR Code: Hosts a document instead of a link, so a menu, brochure, or spec sheet opens directly on the scanner's phone. On a dynamic code, swapping the file updates every printed copy at once.
Digital Business Card (vCard): Saves a contact card straight to the scanner's phone in one tap, including name, number, email, and title. Sales teams and recruiters use it to replace paper business cards at events.
WiFi QR Code: Joins a network instantly when scanned, no password typing required. Coffee shops, hotels, and offices post it at the entrance so guests connect through the phone's camera.
Location QR Code: Opens a map app with directions already loaded, usually to a street address or venue. Real estate signs and event flyers use it to skip typing an address into a phone.
Restaurant Menu QR Code: Opens a live, editable menu instead of a printed one. Restaurants update prices and items without reprinting a single table tent.

A QR Code's structural format determines its size, data capacity, and which scanners can read it. Seven formats exist, and one of them handles nearly every business use case on this page.
Model 1 is the original 1994 format. It holds less data than later formats and is largely obsolete today.
Model 2 is the standard format used by virtually every QR Code generator today.
Micro QR Code shrinks the footprint for low-data, space-constrained labels.
rMQR (Rectangular Micro QR), standardized as ISO/IEC 23941:2022, fits narrow spaces like test-tube labels and cable tags.

What's the difference between a static and dynamic QR Code?
Every QR Code is either static or dynamic and that distinction matters more than any other type classification.
A static QR Code's destination is permanently fixed at creation. A dynamic QR Code's destination can be updated at any time, even after printing. For most real-world applications, dynamic is the right choice.
Dynamic QR Codes don't encode a destination directly. They store a short redirect URL you control, update that redirect whenever you need to, and track every scan, all without reprinting the code. That's why dynamic QR Codes are the standard for menus, packaging, business cards, posters, and any code that needs to stay functional after distribution.
Static QR Codes embed the destination directly in the code. Once printed, nothing changes, no edits, no redirects, no tracking. If the linked page moves or the offer updates, the code becomes useless and existing copies can't be fixed. Static codes work only for content that will never change, like a Wi-Fi password or a permanent contact card.
The QR Code "types" people search for like Facebook QR Code, WhatsApp QR Code, restaurant QR Code aren't truly different types. Every QR Code is either static or dynamic. The destination content varies; the underlying structure doesn't.
That distinction has real consequences. According to Uniqode's State of QR Codes 2026 report, 75% of consumers scan QR Codes to find information, yet only 36% of marketers deliver it. Is it safe to scan an unfamiliar QR Code?
Static, unbranded QR Codes are the most vulnerable to spoofing. According to Uniqode's State of QR Codes 2026 report, 58% of consumers feel confident QR Codes are safe to scan but the threat landscape tells a different story. In a FLASH alert coordinated with DHS/CISA dated January 8, 2026, the FBI warned that the North Korean state-sponsored group Kimsuky embedded malicious QR Codes in spearphishing emails targeting U.S. think tanks, NGOs, and government-adjacent organizations.
The scale of the problem is accelerating. Quishing incidents grew fivefold in just three months, from 46,000 to 250,000 between August and November 2025, according to Kaspersky data cited in a February 2026 StrongestLayer report. Alan LeFort, CEO and co-founder of StrongestLayer, identified the issue as structural: "The industry spent billions to scan QR codes, and attackers still won. This isn't a tuning problem. It's an architectural one."
Unbranded static QR Codes sit at the center of that architectural problem. Their destinations can't be verified before scanning and can't be revoked after printing, two properties that make them the highest-risk format in circulation.
