01

The challenge

A five-person race-timing company lives or dies on the twenty minutes after a runner crosses the line. Everyone wants their split immediately, the results sit on a third-party timing platform behind an event, race and division specific address, and nobody is typing that on a phone in a finish chute. The alternatives are the ones every timer knows: printed results taped to a board, which means a queue, a crowd and a reprint every time a correction lands, or telling runners to check the website later, which just moves the work to email.

02

The solution

Tony runs a tiny set of dynamic codes and re-aims them. The results codes carry a hard-coded event, race and division address, which only works as a reusable asset because the destination is changed for each new race: one printed sign, one sticker board, re-pointed every weekend instead of new print for every event. The second deliberate move is keeping more than one code in play. On a day carrying several events, the extra code lets each event hold its own results address; when both are used at the same event they point at the identical address and differ only in the physical placement they were made for, which turns the pair into a read on where runners actually look.

How Tony puts it to work

One sign, re-pointed every weekend

The results codes hold an event-specific destination that is changed for each new race, so the same printed signage carries this weekend's results instead of last weekend's.

More than one code, by design

On a day with several events, each code can carry its own race. When both run at the same event they share a results destination and differ only in placement, so the split between them shows which spot in the finish area runners actually use.

Results reached without a website search

The scan lands on the specific race and division rather than a platform homepage, which is the difference between an answer and a search box at the end of a race.

Nothing retired in three years

Every code in the account is still live. For reusable signage rather than campaign print, that is the whole design.

04 · The outcome

Three codes, all still live after more than three years, doing work that would normally take a portfolio many times the size. Engagement per code sits in the top few percent of all Uniqode customers, at more than forty times the industry median, the strongest efficiency figure in this group. This is a deliberately small deployment aimed at exactly one moment, and the moment recurs every weekend.
